GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

  • Conduct light summer pruning to control vigorously growing shrubs. Do not prune shrubs that will produce either berries in autumn or flowers in spring. The buds for these are already forming.
  • Lift and divide bearded irises if the flowers have finished blooming or increase the feeding for next year’s crop.
  • Lightly prune and feed your roses to promote an autumn flush. Spray for black and mildew.
  • Look out for red spider on fuchsias, roses and hydrangeas.
  • Divide arum lilies now if they are over crowded.
  • If planting your Christmas tree into the garden, leave in the shade to acclimatize to the outdoors for a while. Then plant in the full sun.
  • To encourage your orchids to produce flowers begin feeding them with a fertilizer low in nitrogen and high in potassium.
